A native of Muskogee, Oklahoma, he also was a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-American and All-Southwestern Athletic Conference performer. The switch-hitting team captain, who excelled remarkably at shortstop and was timed at 4.3 in the 40-yard dash, finished his collegiate career with a .360 batting average. One of his most productive years occurred as a sophomore when he completed the season ranked second in the SWAC with a .436 batting average.

During his sophomore season, the hard throwing right-hander also took the mound and pitched just about every third rotation. He is a member of the UAPB National Alumni Association, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
