General M. Ross Jr. is a 1972 graduate who was a four-year letterman in tennis. Like so many other tennis players from Roanoke who migrated to UAPB, he was very productive on the tennis court. He was part of the doubles champions in the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC) Flight #3 Division in 1971. Additionally, he was undefeated at #3 singles that same year. He received the team’s Most Valuable Player Award in 1972 and was a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Tennis Player Award. After graduation, he spent four years as part of the United States Army traveling tennis team and was a behavior science specialist for the Army in 1974. He also was an instructor with the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice for 15 years. He also has served as a social studies and history teacher in the Roanoke City Schools.
