Alvin Griggs Sr. a 1965 graduate who was a two-year letterman in track and field. A native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, he joined the track team as a walk-on sprinter in his freshman year and made an immediate impact on the team. He turned in some impressive times in the 100 and 220-yard dashes, and anchored the 440-yard relay throughout his sophomore year that included setting new meet records in those events at that time. The highlight of his sophomore season was being named to the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference team and also being the second ranked 220-yard sprinter in the NAIA. Shortly after graduating, he relocated to Champaign and enrolled into graduate school at the University of Illinois, earning a master’s degree in education. For almost three decades, he served in various positions as an educator and coach within the Champaign School District. In addition to being a business owner, he is a member of several organizations, including the UAPB and University of Illinois Alumni Associations, the Federation of Teachers, former board member of the Illinois Association of Park Districts, former commissioner of the Champaign Park District, the Urbana Rotary Club and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
