James W. Mitchell Jr. is a 1977 graduate who was a three-year letterman in tennis. Without a doubt, he had an outstanding tennis career as he earned several honors and awards, including defeating the Number One ranked player in Arkansas during his junior season. Despite being on a squad with only two players, he turned in an impressive freshman season and was invited, along with teammate Doug Younger, to the NAIA national tennis tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. He only lost three single matches during his collegiate career. He served as a student-coach in 1977 and worked hard to help the team improve. After graduating with a degree in business administration, he returned to Roanoke and continued his skills as a player in the Volvo Tennis League while also being dedicated with helping kids develop an interest in tennis. He is an ordained minister and is a member of Emmanuel Tabernacle Baptist Church Apostle Faith, Inc. in Roanoke. He also is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
