Lady Lions Softball Open Season In Louisiana

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team will open year two of Michael Bumpers era when it heads to Lake Charles, Louisiana, for the McNeese State Tournament, Feb. 7-9. The Lady Lions will play five games against different opponents over three days, beginning with the season opener Friday at noon against Prairie View at Joe Miller Field.

After going through much of 2019 with a heavily depleted roster, UAPB goes into Bumpers' second season with a deeper, more experienced group. The Lady Lions focused on depth around the lineup by adding some veteran transfers and some talented freshman position players.

The Lady Lions return senior Shanice Akins, a second-team 2020 Preseason All-SWAC outfielder. Last season, Akins hit .349 in her junior season with 38 hits, 12 RBIs, 15 runs scored, and one home run in 38 games played last season. Her seven doubles, five triples, and 6-of-7 stolen bases led the team in 2019.

"We are very optimistic about where are as a program right now," Bumpers said. "I'm excited because we added a lot of depth in every position compared to last year. We have some outstanding hitters who can swing the bat along with speed to add to this year's team."
