Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. (May 11) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Softball team starved off elimination with an 11-5 win over Alcorn State in a 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament elimination game, here Thursday afternoon at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex .
UAPB adds another milestone for the 2017 season with the win. It gives the Lady Lions their first tournament win in school history.
The Lady Lions pounded out 16 hits, while the Lady Braves finished the contest with 10.
Monique Nikolao had the hot bat for UAPB with her going three-for-four from the plate, scoring two runs and driving in one.
ASU was led by Sametria Collins from the plate with her also finishing the contest by going three-for-four from the plate and scoring two runs.
Angelique Ramos (10-8) received the win and
Karia Beth Hall (1) received the save for UAPB. Ramos gave up eight hits, five earned runs and struck out three in four innings of work, while Hall pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just hits and striking out one in the 12 batters she faced.
Ambria Dorsey (3-9) received the loss for the Lady Braves. She pitched one and two-third innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs and struck out one in the 11 batters she faced.
ASU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the contest with the Lady Braves recording back-to-back home runs by Taylor Hughes and Jessica Crum in the bottom of the first of inning.
UAPB answered in the in the top of the second inning with the Lady Lions scoring seven runs in the inning to take a 7-3 advantage over Lady Braves.
ASU would cut UAPB's lead to 7-5 with the Lady Braves scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning and another in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Lady Lions increased their lead to 11-5 with UAPB scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Nikolao scored the first run of the inning on a Hall double to leftfield. Hall would then score on a Lady Brave fielding error. A
Shanice Akins single to left field scored Graham and then Akins would then score on a
Paige Garcia single.
UAPB will now face Southern University or Alabama A&M in a 12 p.m. elimination game on tomorrow, May 12 at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
