Longview, Tex- On the third and final day of SWAC Round-up action, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lion's softball team wrapped up the opening weekend of conference play with two games on Sunday.
Game one matched UAPB against Mississippi Valley State University and in game two UAPB faced Alabama State University.
In game one,
Heather Leigh did the job at the plate for the Lady Lions; going 2-for-3 and scoring three runs as UAPB upset the defending 2012 SWAC Softball champions Mississippi Valley State 4-3. As a team UAPB out hit MVSU seven hits to six. The Lady Lions Lacie Sutterfield got credited with the complete game victory.
“We went in strong and never gave up. When they fought back we didn't break and came back stronger; we never gave up and I could see that in my player's eyes. They wanted this game more than anything”, said head coach
Tiffany Ansley about her team's performance.
In the second game of the day, UAPB took care of business against Alabama State and pulled out the victory 3-2. The Lady Lions jumped out to an early lead, 3-0, by the end of the second inning, as Leigh and Jasmine Hardwrick would each drive in a run. ASU managed two runs but the Lady Lions were able to hold the Lady Hornets at bay to come out the victory.
“Our team was still up from the previous win; we stuck to the game plan and stayed strong as a team. The intensity and fight was there throughout the whole game”, added Ansley.
The Lady Lions are back at home on Tuesday, March 26
th, as they host Langston University in double header action. The first game will start at 1:00 PM.
