Longview, Tex- Today in SWAC round-up softball action, first year head coach
Tiffany Ansley and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions softball team opened the SWAC conference portion of their 2013 season against the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University.
The Lady Lions got on the scoreboard first, in the top half of the second inning, Jordan Foyer and Jasmine Hardwrick both reached based on singles; while Foyer would cross home plate when Emille Gywn grounded out into a fielder's choice for a 1-0 score.
In the fifth inning, after a single and a stolen base Delya Jackson came around for the Lady Lions second run of the ballgame. Alcorn State would also drive in their only run of the game during their half of the fifth.
Going into the sixth inning with a 2-1 advantage, the Lady Lions busted the ballgame open on five hits for seven runs for today's final of 9-1. The highlight of the scoring barrage was Hardwrick's three run homerun, which drove in Foyer and Lacie Sutterfield. Sutterfield was also credited with the victory, striking out six batters in six innings of work.
“We showed up and showed out. We wanted to make a statement with our first game. The girls intensity was up from the get go, I'm very proud of my players and cannot wait to see what we have in store”, said Ansley.
When asked about her expectations going into the round-up coach Ansley offered this, “We had a long talk after Wednesday's game and agreed that changes had to be made. The intensity on the bus and in warm-ups was different; much more focused and game ready.”
Next on tap, in round-up action for the Lady Lions, are two games on Saturday afternoon. The first game, at 12:30 pm with match UAPB against Alabama A&M and in the 3:00 pm contest the UAPB will face Jackson State University.
