#UAPBBasketball: Men’s & Women’s Prepare For SWAC Road Opener Against Alabama A&M

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's and women's basketball team tips off the 2022-23 Southwestern Athletic Conference portion of its schedule tonight to face Alabama A&M in Huntsville, Alabama, at the Event Center. 

The women's game will tip off at 5 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on AAMUATHLETICS, with live stats available here

The women's basketball is coming off a 61-57 in-state rival win over Central Arkansas at home at the H.O. Clemmons Arena. The Lady Lions had three student-athletes score in double-double figures, led by (Memphis transfer) Coriah Beck, who had 16 points and six rebounds. Jelissa Reese (Univ. of Troy transfer) added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Maya Peat helped out with 10 points and six rebounds off the bench. 

UAPB comes into conference play ranked first in combined rebounds averaging (40.9), first in block shots, averaging (4.20), and third in scoring, averaging (60.0) points per game. Maori Davenport (Georgia transfer) leads the conference in double-doubles this season with (three), rebounds per game (9.1) and blocks per game (2.3). Reese ranks second in the conference in steals per game (2.4). 

The Lady Bulldogs are coming off a nail-biter, 53-51 win over Central Arkansas, led by Toni Grace, who leads the team in scoring averaging 22.8 points per game. 

On the men's side, the Golden Lions will play their first game since a 104-50 win at home against Ecclesia College. UAPB took advantage of great ball movement in the win over Ecclesia, piling up 27 assists on 36 made field goals. 

The Golden Lions had five student-athletes score double figures, led by Shaun Doss Jr. (SIUE/UAPB transfer), who had 24 points and two steals. Orion Virden added 18 points off the bench. Kylen Milton chipped in as well with a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists. 

As a unit, the Golden Lions come into tonight's matchup with a stingy defense and ranking in the top two in the conference in defense, giving up 69.6 points per game. UAPB ranks third in 3-point FGs made (104), second in average 3-point FGs per game (8), third in assists per game (13.46), fourth in steals per game (8.38), and fifth in combined rebounds per game (35.7). 

Doss leads the conference in scoring and points per averaging (229/17.6) and first in free-throw percentage (.831). Ismael Plet (Oral Roberts transfer) ranks second in total rebounds (82) and fourth in rebounds per game (6.3). Milton ranks second in the conference in total assists (63) and assists per game (4.8). 

The Bulldogs are coming off a 90-59 loss at Ohio St. Garrett Hicks (15.4) points per game leads AAMU in scoring.
