COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Quion Williams scored 21 points and Jaquan Scott added 20, but the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 84-81 loss to Southern Thursday at Gateway Center Arena.
With the season coming to a close, the Golden Lions capped off a strong year by securing a top-five regular-season finish and recording 10 conference wins for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
UAPB placed five players in double figures, led by Williams, who posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Scott added 20 points and six rebounds, while Alex Mirhosseini chipped in 15 points. Trevon Payton helped spark the perimeter attack, knocking down three 3-pointers.
As a team, the Golden Lions shot the ball well from beyond the arc, connecting on 8-of-17 attempts from 3-point range.
How It Happened
After trailing 27-19 in the first half, UAPB used a 9-0 run with 6:40 remaining before halftime to take a 28-27 lead. Southern answered before the break, and the Golden Lions entered halftime trailing 39-37.
In the second half, Southern built its advantage to 76-70 before UAPB responded with a 5-0 run, capped by a Mirhosseini 3-pointer, to cut the deficit to 76-75 with 2:18 left to play. The Jaguars, however, closed out the game by outscoring the Golden Lions down the stretch to secure the 84-81 victory.
