UAPB Basketball To Host Alcorn State On MLK Day

1/19/2020 4:55:00 PM

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's and men's basketball teams return home Monday evening hosting Alcorn State on Martin Luther King Day at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

The doubleheader is set for 5 p.m. with the women's game, followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. The UAPB Sports Network will have the live broadcast starting at 4:45 p.m. on 99.3 FM The Beat, online at uaplionsroar.com, and on the free UAPB Athletics app.

General admission for Monday's evening event is $5 for both games.

The Lady Lions (3-11 overall, 2-2 SWAC) are coming off a 70-43 loss to Southern and will be looking to bounce back against the Lady Braves. UAPB swept Alcorn State in both matchups last season.

"The biggest thing is we have to put last night's game behind us," said first-year UAPB head coach Dawn Brown. "We'll continue to watch film and clean up some of our mistakes. The team is ready to focus their game plan on Alcorn State and move forward."

In the matchup against Southern, UAPB was led by senior Aiya El Hassan, sophomore Morgan Christian, and freshman Tyler Pyburn, who each scored six points apiece.

Alcorn State (7-10 overall, 3-2 SWAC) enters the match on a two-game winning streak, defeating Mississippi Valley State 81-67. The Lady Braves are led by LaRae Rascoe, who leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.6 ppg, and Diamond Hall, who leads the team in rebounds, averaging 4.8 rpg.

On the men's side, following Saturday night 75-56 loss to Southern, UAPB (3-13 overall, 2-2 SWAC) will be looking to get back in the win column against Alcorn State.  The last time these two teams met, the Golden Lions defeated the Braves 73-62.

"This is a very competitive conference, and teams are looking to get a win over UAPB," said UAPB head coach George Ivory. "We just have to get back in the flow of things and focus on making free throws and committing fewer turnovers."

In the game against Southern, the Golden Lions had two players scored in double figures, led by redshirt junior Zavian Jackson with 15 points and junior Terrance Banyard with 13 points.

Alcorn State (7-9 overall, 3-2 SWAC) defeated Mississippi Valley State 105-73.  The Braves are led by Maurice Howard, who leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.4 ppg, and Kobe Wilson, who leads the team in rebounds, averaging 6.1 rpg.
