With fall semester classes behind them, head coach George Ivory and his team turn their full attention to basketball and the final three games of December prior to Southwestern Athletic Conference play beginning Jan. 4 at Miss. Valley St.

"It's good for the guys to be able to get some rest and not be on the road as much," Ivory said. "It's a chance for us to get back home, get a lot of shots up, and work on our execution. It's really going to help us over the next few weeks."

UAPB is coming off an 80-46 loss Saturday at Oregon St. Marquell Carter (13 points) and Dequan Morris (11 points) were the two Golden Lions in double figures against the taller, bigger Beavers of the Pac 12 Conference.

"We played solid defense for the most part, but we still have to take care of that basketball better," Ivory said. "That's been an issue for us all year. The guys are trying to make plays instead of being more patient and making the simple play. Overall, we are getting better at what we are trying to do."

New Mexico St. (6-6) of the Western Athletic Conference has had its ups and downs, as the Miners have won know more than two in a row nor lost more than two in a row through the first 12 games. Trevlin Queen (15.3 ppg., 5.6 rpg., 3.3 apg.) leads NMSU. in scoring, with Jabari Rice (12.8 ppg., 4.7 rpg.) second. New Mexico St. is eighth in the WAC in scoring (67.1 ppg) and first in scoring defense (64.4 ppg).

"They are a great defensive team and a very well-coached team," Ivory said. "We've challenged ourselves at practice over the last few days on improving on lower turnovers and rebounding. We'll see how much we've improved tomorrow night."
