Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University guard Sidney Umude knocked down a pair of free throws with .5 seconds left in overtime to help the Jaguars hold on beat the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff 69-67 in controversial fashion Saturday at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Baton Rouge.
Umude finished with a team-high 22 points and 6 rebounds for Southern (2-16, 1-3), which led by as many as 16 points in the second half before holding off a furious UAPB rally. The Golden Lions trailed 41-25 with 19:32 left in the game but slowly chipped away at their deficit until finally tying the game at 55-55 on a lay-up from senior guard Martaveous McKnight with 3:59 remaining. UAPB (6-11, 3-1) again tied the game at 60-60 on a short jumper from McKnight with 1:35 to go and had to sweat out two missed shots by Southern over the final 18 seconds to get to overtime.
The lead changed hands six times in the first 3:38 of the extra session before a bucket by Southern guard Jayden Saddler tied the game at 67-67 with 50 seconds left. UAPB guard Shaun Doss later missed a three-pointer with 18 seconds showing that would've given the Golden Lions the lead. The Jaguars, in turn, grabbed the rebound and worked the ball to Umude, who had his attempt blocked by McKnight. The ball ricocheted back to Umude, who threw up a wide shot just before the buzzer sounded but was bailed out after officials whistled McKnight for a foul. The senior eventually hit both free throws, but the Golden Lions didn't officially get a chance at a last-second heave. UAPB inbounded the ball shortly after Umude's free throws but the clocked failed to start. Officials huddled and ruled that the Golden Lions were able to get the ball in play despite the clock not starting, which therefore ended the game.
McKnight had a game-high 29 points for UAPB.
The Golden Lions will travel to Alcorn State on Monday to face the Braves at 7:30 p.m. before returning home on Jan. 26 to battle Texas Southern.
