Box Score 2 PINE BLUFF, Ark. - After a rainy weekend full of rescheduling, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions finally hit the diamond and swept conference rival Grambling State University 7-3 and 6-2 in a doubleheader in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The third game of the 3-game series, which initially was the first game, was canceled due to wet field conditions.
UAPB 7, GSU 3
In game one, the Lady Lions jumped all over the Lady Tigers in the opening inning, taking a commanding 4-0 lead after
Shanice Akins doubled to right field to advance the speedster
Ta'Lyn Moody. Following an errant throw from the Lady Tigers, Moody scampered past third base and across home plate while Akins advanced to third.
Kayla Ross then generated a RBI that scored Akins, bringing the lead to 2-0 for UAPB. Shortly after, senior
Monique Nikolao produced a RBI single to left field that brought in
Alexandria Taylor.
Kameron Graham then pulled a RBI double to left field that brought home Nikolao.
In the second inning, UAPB added another run when Akins picked up a RBI single to the right side that scored
Nicole Garcia. However, Grambling responded in the top of the fourth with a two-run shot from Tayler Lenz-Selvera to cut the deficit to 5-2, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Lions added a run in both the fifth and sixth inning, closing the door on any comeback attempt as Akins and
Toni Martinez both touched home plate for UAPB. The Lady Tigers scored one more run in the final inning but three pop up fly balls to the outfield ended the game.
Pitcher
Karia Hall (3-7) picked up her third win of the season and finished with three strikeouts, gave up three hits and two earned runs in seven innings of work. Akins finished 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
As a team the Lady Lions produced seven hits and gave up three. UAPBÂ finished with two errors while its opponent had a total of five.
UAPBÂ 6, GSU 2
The Lady Lions got off to a hot start once again in game two and took a three run lead when
Tonnay Hawkins scored on a passed ball.
Alexandria Taylor then produced a RBI and brought in Tay'Lyn Moody. Moments later,
Kayla Ross generated a RBI that scored
Shanice Akins, bring the score to 3-0. The Lady Tigers answered back with a run in both the third and fourth inning, but UAPB countered with three runs in the next two innings when Ross generated a RBI single that brought home Akins, then Akins later produced a two RBI single that allowed both Moody and
Dominique Humphrey to cross home plate.
Angelique Ramos (5-7) was credited with the victory as she struck out one batter, gave up five hits and allowed two runs, one of which was earned. Hawkins finished 2-for-3 from the plate with a run while teammate Moody went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Akins went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while fellow Lady Lion Ross finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Humphrey finished 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored.
UAPBÂ (11-20, 7-2 SWAC) return to action on Tuesday, April 10 as it hosts Louisiana State University-Alexandria in a doubleheader in non-conference action. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex.
