Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - Arkansas-Pine Bluff began conference play by scoring five runs in the third inning and took a commanding 5-1 lead before falling to Jackson State in game one of the three-game series by the score of 7-6 at the Jackson State University Softball Complex.
The Lady Tigers initially scored the first run as UAPB pitcher
Angelique Ramos gave up a home run in the second inning. However, the Lady Lions responded with five runs in the third inning thanks to an RBI by
Shanice Akins that scored speedster
Tonnay Hawkins. The second run was generated by
Monique Nikolao as she produced an RBI-single up the middle that brought in
Ta'Lyn Moody. The next two runs came at the hands of a Jackson State error by its third baseman as
Kayla Ross and
Alexandria Taylor crossed home plate. UAPB scored one more unearned run before the inning was over as Nikolao eventually touched home plate on a passed ball.
Trailing 5-1, The Lady Tigers answered back with a run in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to tie things up at five apiece. In the sixth inning, the Lady Lions scored another unearned run thanks to another error by Jackson State's third baseman as
Karia Hall scored what seemed to be the game-winning run, giving UAPB a 6-5 lead heading into final inning. However; Jackson State would muster up not only the game-tying run but initiated a walk-off single with the bases loaded to complete the comeback.
Ramos was credited with the loss as she fanned five batters but gave up five runs in five innings pitched. Moody finished with a game-high three hits and went 3-for-4 from the plate.
UAPBÂ (3-16, 0-1 SWAC) returns to action as it faces Jackson State (7-9, 1-0 SWAC) in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 20. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. in Mississippi.
