UAPB falls 76-71 to Panthers in overtime thriller

Box Score PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions missed a golden opportunity as it fell 76-71 in overtime against Prairie View A&M University at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. After trailing by six points at the half, UAPB climbed back to force overtime on a Travon Harper bucket with one second left in regulation before it was outscored 12-7 in the extra period. The game marks the fourth straight SWAC loss for UAPB.

UAPB was led by Harper who finished with 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field to go along with seven rebounds while fellow Golden Lion Christian Robertson shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and scored 14 points in the loss. Charles Jackson chipped in with 13 points and hit 5-of-7 free throws. Martaveous McKnight had a quiet night and scored just six points. He also grabbed six rebounds and had four assists while Trent Steen chopped in with nine points and five rebounds.

The Golden Lions (9-19, 9-4 SWAC) shot 52 percent from the field and held its opponent to 42 percent. The rebound battle was basically a push as Prairie View (11-16, 8-5 SWAC) produced one more rebound than UAPB (36-35), but the long-range shooting woes continued for the Golden Lions as it shot just 2-for-16 from downtown while the Panthers hit 7-of-28.

Gary Blackston and Dennis Jones both scored 17 points apiece for the Panthers, who improved to 8-5 in conference play with the win. The Panthers produced a total of five scorers in double figures.

UAPB returns to action on Monday, February 19 as it hosts Texas Southern University in SWAC action. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at H.O. Clemmons Arena. The game has been dubbed "Military Night" as free admission will be given to all military personnel and first responders dressed in uniform or with valid identification. On January 22, the Golden Lions defeated UAPB 74-72 in Houston.
