UAPB on 3-game skid after biggest SWAC loss of season

Box Score LORMAN, Miss. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions suffered its biggest Southwestern Athletic Conference loss of the season with a 32-point drumming on the road against Alcorn State at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. The 84-52 loss marks the third in a row for the Golden Lions, who officially dropped out of first place in the SWAC.

UAPB (9-18, 9-4 SWAC) was led by Martaveous McKnight who finished with 29 points on 10-of-24 shooting from the field to go along with four rebounds, four turnovers, two steals and one assist. He also hit a total of five three-pointers in the loss while teammate Trent Steen finished with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and also had three rebounds, four turnovers, and one block. Other than those two, the Golden Lions did not produce any other scorers in double figures and lost the rebound battle 40-25.

Alcorn State (9-17, 5-8 SWAC) went on a 17-2 run to end the first half and never looked back. The Braves scored a total of 40 points in the paint to only 22 for UAPB. Alcorn also scored nearly twice as many bench points (27) as the Golden Lions (14) and hit twice as many three-pointers (12) as UAPB (6).

David Tillman came off the bench for UAPB and chipped in with six points and four rebounds. For Alcorn, it produced a total of four scorers in double figures, including a team-high 22 points from A.J. Mosby, who shot 9-for-11 from the field and nailed 4-of-5 from downtown.

As a team the Golden Lions shot 35 percent from the field while its opponent shot nearly 60 percent from the field.

UAPB returns to action on Saturday, February 17 as it hosts Prairie View A&M in SWAC play. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m at H.O. Clemmons Arena. On January 20, the Golden Lions squeezed by the Panthers 72-66 at the William J. Nicks Baby Dome.
