SOUTHERN EDGES UAPB, 76-75 TO SNAP THREE-GAME WIN STREAK

Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. (Jan. 14) - Southern University handed the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Men's Basketball team first conference loss of the season in a 76-75 win over the Golden Lions, here Saturday afternoon at the F.G. Clark Activity Center, snapping UAPB's three-game win streak.
 
 
In a contest that was that similar of a heavy weight boxing match with neither team yielding to the other.  This heavy weight contest saw 14 lead changes and the score tied 10 times with biggest lead being held by Southern was nine points and five points by UAPB. 
 
 
Charles Jackson nailed a three pointer with 4:03 remaining in the contest put UAPB ahead 73-72.
 
 
SU would pull ahead 74-73 on a Jared Sam dunk with 3:45 to go and then would nail a free throw with 2:38 to go to put the Jaguars ahead 75-73.
 
 
Deshon Bayless tied the score at 75-75 for UAPB with his layup at the 1:05 mark of the contest.  
 
 
A foul by Jackson with four seconds left in regulation sent Sam to the charity stripe, where he would hit the first free throw to give SU the 76-75 win.
 
 
In a first half that saw seven leads changes and seven ties with UAPB finishing the half scoring 14 points off  turnovers, 11 second chance points , four fast break points  and 20 bench points.
 
 
SU finished the half scoring four points off of turnovers, two second chance points, four fast break points and eight bench points.
 
 
UAPB finished the first half shooting, 34.3 percent (12-of-35), while SU shot 61.9 percent (13-of-21).
 
 
SU grabbed an early 6-4 lead on a free throw by Emanuel Sheperd with 18:46 to go in the half.
 
 
The Golden Lions regained the lead with an 8-5 run to take an 11-12 lead on a Jackson three pointer at the 12:04 mark.  UAPB then extended their lead to 16-11 with a 5-0 run on a pair of Travon Harper free throws with 10:35 remaining.
 
 
SU tied the contest at 17-17 on a Shawn Prudhomme three pointer with 9:34 o to go capping a 6-1 run
by the Jaguars.  The Jaguars then extended their lead to 26-21 on another three pointer by Prudhomme at the 5:53 mark. 
 
 
Kennedy McKinney tied the contest at 35-35 with his layup at the 1:08 mark of the half. 
 
 
UAPB outscored SU, 4-3 to take a 39-38 lead at the break.
 
 
The Jaguars opened the second half with a 12-5 run to take a 50-43 lead on a Prudhomme layup with
17:16 to go in the half.  SU then extended their lead to 57-48 on a pair of Sam free throws with 13:38 to
to go in the contest.
 
 
UAPB regained the lead with a 12-1 run to take a 60-58 lead on a McKInney three pointer with 10:08 to
Go.
 
In the final 10 minutes of the contest both team would trade baskets and leads with the biggest lead
endured by either team is three points. 
 
 
UAPB finished the contest scoring 26 points in the paint, 26 points off of turnovers, 13 second chance points, six fast break points and 42 bench points. 
 
SU finished the contest 30 points in the paint, 13 points off of turnovers, 10 second chance points, six fast break points and 16 bench points.
 
The Golden Lions finished the contest shooting 42.1 percent (24-of-57), while SU shot 53.5 percent (23-of-43).  SU held the rebounding margins over UAPB, 37-34.
 
 
UAPB (4-14, 3-1 SWAC) had three players to finish in double-figures with Trent Steen scoring a team high 18 points.  Charles Jackson finished with 14 and Travon Harper added 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds for UAPB.
 
SU (7-11, 3-2 SWAC) had five players to score in double-figures with Prudhomme scoring a game high 22 points on six-for-11 shooting from behind the three-point arc and eight-for-13 from the field.  Sam, Trelun Banks and Christopher Thomas all finished with 11 points each for the Jaguars, while LaQuentin Collins added 10.     Both Prudhomme and Sam pulled down a team high seven rebounds to lead the Jaguars on the boards.
 
UAPB will return to action on Monday, January 16 against Alcorn State in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
