Trent Whiting scored a team high 14 points from off the bench for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Men Basketball Team in a 56-50 loss to Texas Southern here Saturday night at the HPE Arena.
In the first stanza of play, TSU jumped out to a 12-3 lead on a Malcolm Riley three pointer with 12:42 remaining in the half.
A three pointer by Thaddeus Handley pulled the Golden Lions within 20-19 with 6:11 remaining in the half, capping a 16-6 run by UAPB.
A put back by
Jaylon Floyd gave the Golden Lions a 31-30 lead going into the intermission.
UAPB finished the first half shooting 45.2 percent (14-of-31), while TSU shot 33.3 percent (8-of-24).
TSU opened the second half with a 9-5 run to take 40-35 lead on a Madarious Gibbs layup with 14:25 remaining in the half.
Whiting cut the TSU's lead to 46-45 with 7:29 remaining in regulation capping a 10-6 run by UAPB.
TSU would score the next six points on a four Riley free throws and a David Blanks layup to take a 52-45 lead with 5:11 left in the contest.
UAPB pulled within four on an
Austin Cox free throw with 4:16 remaining in regulation, cutting the Tigers' lead to 52-48.
Ghiavonni Robinson scored the Golden Lions final basket of the contest with a 10 seconds left as TSU held on for the 56-50 win.
UAPB finished the contest shooting 35.6 percent (21-of-59), while TSU shot 35.7 percent (15-of-42).
TSU (14-12, 11-2 SWAC)was paced by Riley with a game high 22 points and nine rebounds to lead all-scorers, followed by Chris Thomas with 10.
UAPB (10-18, 6-8 SWAC) only had two players to score in double-figures with Whiting and
JoVaughn Love with 10.
The Golden Lions will return to action on Monday, Feb. 23 as they will travel to Prairie View, Texas to take on Prairie View A&M in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
