Box Score PINE BLUFF, Ark. (Jan. 24) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Men's Basketball Team knocked off league leading Texas Southern with a 66-62 win over the Tigers, here Saturday night the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
TSU grabbed the early 3-0 lead on a layup by Madarious Gibbs and free throw by David Blanks with 17:22 to go in the first.
UAPB countered with an 18-5 run to take an 18-8 lead, capped off by a
Jaylon Floyd dunk with 12:23 left in the half.
TSU ended the first half with a 25-12 run to tie the contest at 30-30 going into the break.
UAPB finished the first half shooting 41.4 percent (12-of-29), while TSU shot 40.0 percent (8-of-20).
The Golden Lions opened the second half with a 17-5 run to take a 47-35 lead with 12:39 left in the game, capped off by a Thaddeus Handley layup.
TSU tied the contest at 56-56 on a Blanks layup with 4:02 left in regulation, capping a 21-9 run by the Tigers.
UAPB reclaimed the lead 60-59 on four made free throws two by
Marcel Mosley and
Tevin Hammond with 2:13 left in the contest.
In the final two minutes of the contest the Golden Lions went six-for-eight from the charity stripe to claim the 66-62 victory over the Tigers.
UAPB finished the contest shooting 38.9 percent (21-of-54), while TSU shot 41.3 percent (19-of-46).
TSU (8-11, 5-1 SWAC) had three Tigers to score in double-figures with Gibbs scoring a team high 15 points, followed by Chris Thomas with 14 and Blanks with 11. Thomas led the Tigers on the boards with seven, while Nick Shepherd recorded three blocks in the contest.
UAPB (5-15, 2-4 SWAC) was led by
Ghiavonni Robinson as he scored a game high 20 points to lead all-scorers, followed by Thaddeus Handley and
Trent Whiting as they both finished with 12 points each for the Golden Lions. Handley led the Golden Lions on the boards with nine, while Mosley dished out a game high four assists.
The Golden Lions will return to action on Monday, January 26 as they will take on Prairie View A&M in a 8 p.m. start at the H.O. Clemmons Arena to be broadcasted on live on ESPNU.
