Box Score PINE BLUFF, Ark. (Jan. 10) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Men's Basketball team dropped their fourth straight contest as Alabama State held on for a 74-71 win over the Golden Lions, here Saturday afternoon at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
In the first half, UAPB (3-13, 0-2 SWAC) grabbed the early 19-3 lead as the Golden Lions went eight for 12 from the floor in the first nine minutes of the contest, capped off by a
Trent Whiting layup with 11:56 to go.
ASU used a 14-7 run to cut UAPB's lead to 26-17 capped off by a Steve Rogers three pointer with 6:39 left in the half.
UAPB finished the first half shooting 50.0 percent (15-of-30), while ASU shot 45.5 percent (10-of-22) as the Golden Lions went into the break leading the Hornets 36-29 at the half.
In the second half, the Hornets opened up the half with a 12-5 run to tie the contest at 41-41 on Wendell Lewis jumper at the 15:28 mark of the half.
ASU took a 56-48 advantage on a Maurice Strong layup with 8:27 to in the half.
Tevin Hammond cut ASU's lead to 66-65 with a layup with 2:58 left, capping a 17-9 run by the Golden Lions with
Marcel Mosley scoring nine of the 17 points in the run.
Two quick baskets by
JoVaughn Love and Mosley gave the Golden Lions a 69-68 lead with 56 second left in the contest.
ASU regained the lead with a Bobby Brown three pointer with 14 second left, giving the Hornets a 71-69 lead.
Ghiavonni Robinson closed the gap to 72-71 for UAPB with a pair of free throws with two second left in the game.
But Brown answered with a pair of free throws for the Hornets to give ASU the 74-71 win.
UAPB had four Golden Lions to finish the contest in double-figures with Mosley scoring a team high 19 points, followed by Love with 16, Robinson with 11 and Thaddeus with 10. Hammond led the team in assists with five.
ASU(7-5, 3-0 SWAC) had three Hornets to score in double figures with Brown leading the way with a game high 20 points to lead all scorers, followed by Wendell Lewis with 16 and Strong with 15. Brown led the team on the boards with eight, while Jamel Waters dished out a team high five assists.
UAPB will return to action on Monday, January 12 as they will host Alabama A&M in a 7:30 p.m. start at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
