Men's Basketball: UAPB Holds Off Jackson State for a, 66-59 Win

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. (March 3) – The University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Men's Basketball Team won their second straight with a 66-59 win over Jackson State, here Monday night at the Lee E. Williams Athletic Assembly Center.

JSU grabbed the early 5-0 lead with a two quick scores by Dontaveon Robinson and Javeres Brent with 18:58 to go in the first.

UAPB would tie the contest at 5-5 on back-to-back field goals with 18:03 to go in first.

The Tigers would use an 8-5 run to take a 13-10 with 13:05 left in the half, capped off by a Derell Taylor layup.

UAPB would knot the contest at 15-15 on a Tevin Hammond three pointer at the 10:25 mark of half.

The half would then see four more ties as Julysses Nobles tied the contest at 27-27 on pair of free throws with 17 seconds left.

Hammond would complete a three point play with 3.2 seconds left in the half to give the Golden Lions a 30-27 lead at the half.

UAPB finished the half shooting 47.8 percent (11-of-23), whereas JSU shot 45.0 percent (9-of-20).

In a nip and tuck second half UAPB would extend lead to 42-35 on a Daniel Broughton put back with 11:53 left in the game.

JSU would close the gap with a 7-2 run of their own, cutting UAPB's lead to 46-44, capped off by a Brandon West layup with 7:05 left in the contest.

The Golden Lions would respond with a run of their own as took a 55-47 lead on a pair of Trent Whiting free throws with 3:44 left, capping a 9-3 run by UAPB.

Nobles would hit a running jumper with 23 second left to cut the Golden Lions' lead to 61-59, capping a 9-4 run by the Tigers.

The Golden Lions would score the final five points of the game for the 66-59 win.

UAPB (12-17, 10-7 SWAC) had a quartet of Golden Lions to score in double figures with Hammond scoring a team high 16 points. Davon Haynes pumped in 13 points, followed by Broughton with 12 and Whitting with 10 to round out the cast of double-digit performers. UAPB had three Golden Lions to finish with six rebounds each.

JSU (11-17, 7-9 SWAC) was paced by Nobles with a team high 16 points, while Brandon West pumped in 14 to round out the cast of double-digit scorers for the Tigers.

UAPB will return to action on Saturday, March 8 as they will welcome Mississippi Valley State to the H. O. Clemmons Arena in a 7:30 p.m. start
