UAPB Upset Bid Falls Short At Akron

Box Score Akron, OHIO The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's basketball team led Akron at the half, Tuesday, but was out-manned in the second half as the Zips pulled away for a 81-60 win at James A Rhodes Arena.

UAPB (1-6) headed to the locker room halftime with a 32-31 lead. The Zips led several times in the half, but never by more than two points.

After the Zips's Kwan Cheatham made the first basket of the game, UAPB's Ghiavonni Robinson hit a three pointer at the 19:16 mark. Marcel Mosley answered with another three of his own on the Golden Lions next possession to put UAPB on top, 6-2.

Junior forward JoVaughn Love a native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, hit a three to keep the Golden Lions ahead by three (8-5) at the 17:53 mark of the first half.  Akron would come back to grab a short-lived lead, 23-22, on a dunk by Pat Forsythe with 7:26 remaining in the half.

Jaylon Floyd layup put the Golden Lions back up, 24-23, with a pass from Tevin Hammond with 6:52 to go until halftime. UAPB expanded its lead back to three before Akron whittled it away to one point at halftime.

The Golden Lions shot prior to halftime (14-34, 41.2 percent) and hit 4-of-9 from three-point range. At the same time, Akron shot just over 39.1 percent from the floor (9-23) and was also 3-of-10 from beyond the arc, but went to the free throw line nine times compared to UAPB zero in the first half.

The Zips put together a 29-10 run opening up the second half, taking the lead for good to push the lead 60-42 in the 9:51 mark.

Marcel Mosley, one of two in double-digit scoring for the Golden Lions, led UAPB with 20 points, two steals and two assists, Love added 20 points, while Ghiavonni Robinson poured in seven points. Devin Berry finished with a team-high six rebounds.

Kwan Cheatham led the Zips with 17 points. Deji Ibitayo chipped in 13 and Pat Forsythe added 11 points.

Shots made from the free throw line, was difference of the game.  Akron outshot the Golden Lions 24-of-37 compared to 7-of-9 from the charity stripes.

UAPB returns to action, Saturday against Michigan St. at 2:15 p.m., in Lansing, MI. It will be the eight consecutive road games for the Golden Lions.
