UAPB WINS THRILLER OVER HOUSTON, 61-56 IN OVERTIME

Box Score Houston, TX- Marcel Mosley scored a career high 33 points, to help the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff upset the University of Houston, 61-56  in overtime here Tuesday night at Hofheinz Pavailion in their first game of the Las Vegas Continental Classic.

Mosley finished the contest going 10-of-16  from the field and  five-of-nine from the three point range.

UAPB (2-8) clinched their first round victory in the tournament, while handing the Cougars (5-2) their first home loss in five games.

The Golden Lions speed and athleticism were too much for the Cougars, who committed 16 turnovers in the first half.  UAPB scored 20 points off turnovers in the first half before going into the locker room with a 27-16 lead.

UAPB struck first in the second half with a jumper by Tevin Hammond to push the Lions lead to 13 (29-16).

Houston came out the locker room firing and used a 10-0 run down the stretch to tie the game at 45-45 with 0.36 seconds left in the second half. 

Hammonds was fouled with 6.7 seconds and had a chance to win the game in regulation, but missed both free throws to force the game into overtime. 

In overtime, UAPB struck first with two consecutive three point baskets from Ghiavonni Robinson and Marcel Mosley to take a six point lead 51-45 with 2:39 left in the game.

Houston got within three with 30 seconds left  after a free throw and grabbed an offensive rebound by J.C. Washington, but Hammond made a steal and Mosely made four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory

JoVaughn Love added eight points and 10 rebounds, followed by Tevin Hammond with seven points, six assist and eight steals for the Golden Lions.

Jherrod Stigger led Houston with 16 points, LeRon Barnes also chipped in 14 points for the Cougars. 

UAPB shot 18-of-53 (34.0%) from the field compared to Houston 19-of-57 (33.3%).

UAPB will now head to Lubbock for the second round of the Las Vegas Continental tournament where they will face Texas Tech Friday December 19 at 8:00 pm.
