UAPB Drops Season-Opener To Hawaii

Mosley looks to drive the lane
Box Score Honolulu, Hi – The University of at Arkansas Pine Bluff men's basketball team opened its 2014-15 season with an 85-57 loss to the University of Hawaii Warriors Friday night at Stan Sheriff Arena in a non-conference contest.

UAPB (0-1 overall) was led by senior Marcel Mosley, junior JoVaughn Love and sophomore Ghiavonnie Robinson who reached double figures in scoring. Mosley scored a team-high 18 points for the Golden Lions, Love added 15 points and Robinson chipped in with 10.  DeAndre McIntyre follows with a team-high seven rebounds for UAPB.

Both teams combined to make 13 3-pointers, hot handed Mosley made most of his three-point shots early in the game while Hawaii was hot throughout from beyond the arc. Mosley and Robinson combined for half of UAPB's 3-pointers.

UAPB swooshed to an 18-15 lead less than nine minutes into the game following an alley-hoop to Jovaughn Love from Mosley. UAPB outshot the Warriors in the first half (10-for-25) 40% to (11-for-33) 33.3%, to go into the locker room at the half with momentum down 33-32.

"We came out with a lot of energy," UAPB coach George Ivory said. "We have a good group and will put this game behind us. This is a learning experience for us."
Hawaii would go on a 14-5 run to open the second half, as UAPB trailed 47-37.

Unfortunately for UAPB the good times didn't last thanks to Hawaii sophmore guard Aaron Valdes, who scored 17 of his game-high 28 points in the second half. He fueled a Hawaii surge to finish the second half. Valdes was 11-for-15 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point distance.

While Valdes was making shots, UAPB went cold and couldn't knock down baskets. The last nine minutes of the second half, the Warriors went on a 26-6 run to seal the victory.

"The first half hurt us when we couldn't score," Ivory said. We had good looks and the ball went in-and-out. We just couldn't knock down shots. We have to do a better job defensively. If things aren't working for us offensively, then we have to make it tougher on them."

UAPB returns to action Saturday November 15 when it takes on High Point in the 50th Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic beginning at 5pm. pacific time, which will be 9pm. central time.
