Men's Basketball: Lions Suffer a Heartbreak Loss To Hampton Pirates 72-65

Box Score Corpus Christi, TX - UAPB gave up a five point lead at the end of first half and fell short in 72-65 loss to Hampton Pirates (3-5) in the second day of action in the Corpus Christi Challenge played at the American Bank Center.

The Pirates trailed early at halftime 37-32, but battled back to go on an 11-1 run to take the lead 58-56 at the 5:27 mark after two free throws by Ramon Mercado.

UAPB led by as many as 11 points in the second half at the 18:36 mark with a three pointer by Tevin Hammond. The Lions went cold after Hammond three pointer, who finish the game with 12 points and two steals.

The Lions, were led by Daniel Broughton with 16 points, Marcel Mosley follow with 13 points off the bench. Davon Haynes led the team in rebounds with seven and also chipped in 11 points.

The Pirates trimmed away at the Lions (2-6) lead and took the lead and never looked back. In which the Lions shot 14-26 (53.8%) in the first half comparison to shooting 7-21 (33.3%) in the second half.

The Pirates out rebounded the Lions in the game 36-26. As a team, Hampton shot 13-27 (48.1%) percent from the floor in the second half.

The Pirates had three players in double figure, led by Du'Vaughn Maxwell with 20 points and three blocks, follow by Brian Darden with 17 points and Ramon Mercado with 10.

The Lions will return to action against Oregon St. December 7, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Corvallis, Oregon.
