COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- UAPB had a double-digit lead, but couldn't hold on as the Air Force Academy came from behind to nip the Golden Lions 67-64 on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Lions (2-2) were all over the Falcons (2-2) in the first half, leading by as much as 11 points. When Sean Tingle hit a jumper with 5:53 left, UAPB led 29-18. The Golden Lions held on to the lead and took a 38-29 advantage into the lockerroom at the break.
In the second half, the Falcons slowly chipped away at the UAPB lead. They would move ahead with 7:44 left in the game on a 3-pointer by Marek Olesinski. Olesinski's basket gave the Falcons a 51-49 lead.
The game remained close down the stretch and was decided until the final seconds. UAPB trailed 60-58 with 2:46 left in the game. Marcel Mosley nailed a 3-pointer with 2:23 left to give UAPB a 61-60 lead.
The Falcons pulled back ahead on a pair of freethrows by Max Yon with 1:29 left. Then, Mosley turned the ball over and Yon finished it off with a dunk, giving Air Force a 64-61 lead with 1:14 left.
In the waning moments, UAPB trailed 66-62. Mosley and Tevin Hammond missed on 3-pointers as the clock ticked under 10 seconds. Davon Haynes scored on a putback with four seconds left and was fouled. He missed the and-one opportunity intentionally, but the Falcons came up with the rebound, ending the Golden Lions' hopes.
Mosley had 16 points to lead UAPB. He was 5-of-10 from the field, with all but two of his attempts coming from beyond the arc. Haynes added 13 points and six rebounds, while Jaylon Floyd contributed 10 points.
Olesinski paced the Falcons with 20 points. He made 7-of-10 fieldgoals, including six 3-pointers. Yon had 14 points, Darrius Parker added 12 points and Justin Hammonds tallied 11 for the Falcons.
Next week, the Golden Lions will play in the Corpus Christi Challenge. They will play SMU on Nov. 24 in Garland, Texas. Then, UAPB will play Texas A&M on Nov. 26 in College Park.
