STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Golden Lions suffered their first loss of the season, dropping a 97-63 decision to 8th-ranked Oklahoma State. It was the second win of the season against Southwestern Athletic Conference teams. The Cowboys beat Mississippi Valley State 117-62 to open the season. Oklahoma State is 22-0 all-time against SWAC opponents.
Tevin Hammond scored 15 points for the Golden Lions (2-1). DeAndre McIntyre and Davon Haynes each added 13. Hammond was 4-for-16 from the field, including three 3-pointers and was 4-for-4. He also had five assists. Haynes hit 6-of-10 fieldgoals, including a 3-pointer. He also added six rebounds. Meanwhile, McIntyre was 6-for-11, with a 3-pointer.
Phil Forte and Markel Brown each scored 22 points to lead the Cowboys (3-0)., while Marcus Smart added 16 points and Le'Bryan Nash had nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.
UAPB led early, taking a 12-11 lead when Hammond made a long 3-pointer seven minutes into the game. After the Cowboys scored 10 straight en route to a 24-14 lead, 3-pointers by Hammond and McIntyre brought the Golden Lions within 25-22. However, OSU outscored UAPB 21-8 the rest of the half to take a 46-30 lead at halftime.
The Lions trailed by 12 early in the second half (50-38) before OSU blew the game open. The Cowboys went on a 33-4 run that included a 19-0 stretch to take a commanding 83-42 lead with 7:43 left in the game.
The Golden Lions visit Colorado Springs on Sunday to play the Air Force Academy in an afternoon contest.
