ATLANTA -- Four Golden Lions scored in double-figures, including a double-double by Davon Haynes in a 67-54 win over Morehouse College on Monday night at Forbes Arena.
Haynes had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Golden Lions, who improved to 2-0. He also had four blocked shots. Haynes hit 5-of-8 shots from the field and made both of his freethrows.
Tevin Hammond led the way for UAPB, finishing the game with 16 points. He was 5-for-18 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and 4-for-6 from the freethrow line. Marcel Mosely tallied 11 points and Trent Whiting, 10. Mosely was 2-for-3 from the field, 1-for-1 from 3-point range, and 6-for-6 from the freethrow line. Whiting was 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from downtown.
As a team, the Golden Lions shot 44.9% (22-of-49) from the field for the game, including 7-of-20 from 3-point range. The Golden Lions were also efficient from the freethrow line, making 16-of-19.
The Golden Lions led 30-25 after leading by as much as nine (28-19) in the first half. UAPB would increase their lead to 12 after a 3-pointer by Daniel Broughton to open the second half. Then, Morehouse went on a 13-2 run to cut the UAPB lead to 36-34 with 18:17 left in the game.
However, UAPB answered with a 9-0 run to reclaim a double-digit lead. Mosley capped the Golden Lions run with a 3-pointer, giving UAPB a 45-34 lead with 13:51 left.
The Tigers never threatened again as UAPB pulled away. The largest lead of the game for the Golden Lions was 18 points, 66-48, with 1:40 left in the game.
After opening up with a pair of Division II foes, the Golden Lions head to Oklahoma to take on Oklahoma State on Friday.
