ATLANTA -- The UAPB men's basketball team fought off a late rally to open the season with a 66-64 win over Tuskegee in the Morehouse/HBCU Challenge.
Marcel Mosley led the Golden Lions with 18 points, while Davon Haynes had double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Mosley shot 60% from the field, knocking down 6-of-10 shots. He was also 2-for-3 from 3-point range. He was also 4-for-4 from the freethrow line. Meanwhile, Haynes did most of his damage from the line, hitting 9-of-16 attempts. Both of his fieldgoals were from long range.
Elliot Dean paced Tuskegee with 17 points and six rebounds. Richard Dixon added 14 points and six rebounds for the Golden Tigers.
The Golden Lions led 37-30 at halftime, then stretched the lead to 10 early in the second half at 43-33 with 18:05 left. However, TU scored nine unanswered to slice the UAPB lead to 43-42 with 10:16 remaining.
Less than two minute later, the Golden Tigers took the lead on a pair of freethrows by Javier McKinney. The freethrows gave TU a 47-46 lead with 8:24 left. But, UAPB regained the lead and wouldn't give it up down the stretch. The Golden Lions would go back up by as much as seven and hold off a furious charge by TU in the closing seconds.
The Golden Lions will take on Challenge host Morehouse College on Monday night.
