PINE BLUFF -- First-year University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff head basketball coach George Ivory debuted his Golden Lions Saturday night and fans of the Black and Gold were certainly not disappointed!
Behind junior Terrance Calvin's 18 points and 8 rebounds, UAPB (2-10, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) cruised to an easy 74-52 win over Mississippi Valley State at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff.
Joining Calvin in double-figures were sophomore Gavin Montgomery (14 points) and freshman Savalance Townsend (11 points).
The game was never really in doubt as UAPB bolted out to a commanding 22-9 lead and a 32-13 halftime advantage.
Despite the best efforts of Valley's Eric Petty, who notched a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds, the Delta Devils (0-14, 0-1 SWAC) were never able to make up any ground against the pressing Lions.
UAPB, which out-rebounded the Devils 55-37, extended its lead to as many as 29 points in the second half after Montgomery drained a long 3-ball.
Junior Tavaris Washington equaled Calvin's rebound total with eight boards of his own on the evening.
The Golden Lions return to action on Saturday, Jan. 10 as they play host to the Alabama State Hornets at Clemmons Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
