UAPB Basketball Set To Host Alabama St.

2/9/2020 4:31:00 PM

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff basketball women's basketball team is set to host Alabama St. for Meet The Spring Teams Night in the final game of their four-game homestand Monday night at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Monday, the doubleheader begins at 5:30 p.m. with the women's game, followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. The UAPB Sports Network will have the live broadcast starting at 5:15 p.m. with Lions Roar Pregame on 99.3 FM The Beat, online at uaplionsroar.com, and on the free UAPB Athletics app.

Both the women's and men's defeated the Hornets on the road earlier in the year in Montgomery, Alabama.

The Lady Lions are coming off a 65-52 loss to Alabama A&M Saturday night at home. Seniors Noe'll Taylor had a game-high 22 points, followed by Aiya El Hassan with 15 points versus the Lady Bulldogs.

UAPB (4-16 overall, 3-7 SWAC) defeated Alabama St. (6-15 overall, 3-7 SWAC) in the first half of the season 73-62. In the first matchup between the two teams, UAPB had four players score in double figures, led by Taylor who had a then career-high 19, followed by El Hassan with 17, and senior Kyeonia Harris with 10 points. Junior Jayla Atmore added 12 points.

"We have to go back and refocus," said first-year UAPB head coach Dawn Brown. "As a team, we have to do a better job of defending and coming out ready to compete. This team is learning how to win, and when we go into the locker room as a coaching staff, we don't bring them down; we teach them how to make adjustments as the game goes."

On the men's side, UAPB (3-19 overall, 2-8 SWAC) dropped a close one at home to Alabama A&M, 58-54. In the matchup versus the Bulldogs, junior Terrance Banyard had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to for the Golden Lions.

UAPB is looking for their fourth consecutive win against the Hornets. In a 61-56 win over Alabama St in the previous match on January 11, the Golden Lions had two players score in double figures. Senior Marquell Carter had 19, followed by junior Dquan Morris with 10 points against the Hornets.

"We have to go back and watch film on things we didn't do well," said UAPB head coach George Ivory. "We have to make clutch shots in order to give ourselves a chance."
