HOUSTON- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's and men's basketball teams continue their two-game road trip as both squads take on Texas Southern Monday at the Health & Physical Education Arena.
The doubleheader is set for 5:30 p.m. with the women's game, followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. The UAPB Sports Network will have the live broadcast starting at 5:15 p.m. on 99.3 FM The Beat, online at uaplionsroar.com, and on the free UAPB Athletics app.
The Lady Lions (3-13 overall, 2-4 SWAC) overcame a slow start, battled back and outscored Prairie View in the second half, but dropped a 61-51 defeat on the road.
"I told the ladies to hold your head up, put this game behind us and keep pushing as we looked forward to Texas Southern," said first-year UAPB head coach Dawn Brown.
In the matchup Saturday against the Lady Panthers, Kyeonia Harris led UAPB with 16 points and two steals. Noe'll Taylor also added six points and two steals and Jayla Atmore chipped in as well with six points and seven rebounds off of the bench.
The Lady Lions crashed the boards and out-rebounded Prairie View 30-23 Saturday night.
Texas Southern (10-7 overall, 5-1 SWAC) defeated Mississippi Valley St. 88-58 in conference play. The Lady Tigers are led by Ciani Cryor, who leads the team in scoring, averaging 17.9 ppg, and Niya Mitchell, who leads the team in rebounds, averaging 11.0 rpg.
On the men's side, after dropping a 67-54 loss to Prairie View A&M, UAPB is looking to pick up a conference win on the road against Texas Southern.
"In the matchup against Texas Southern, we have to come out with the same energy we had Saturday night," said UAPB head coach George Ivory. "To win this game, we have to make shots and cut down on the turnovers."
Marquell Carter led with 12 points and eight rebounds and Dequan Morris added nine points and two blocks.
Texas Southern (8-11 overall, 5-1 SWAC) defeated Mississippi Valley St. 80-67 Saturday night. Tyrik Armstrong leads the Tigers in scoring, averaging 14.3 ppg., and Yahuza Rasas leads the team in rebounds, averaging 8.8 rpg.
