UAPB Basketball Looks To Bounce Back At Alabama State

1/12/2020 4:36:00 PM

MONTGOMERY, AL. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's and men's basketball teams look to bounce back as they wrap up a two-game road trip Monday night against at Alabama State at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The doubleheader is set for 5:30 p.m. with the women's game, followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. The UAPB Sports Network will have the live broadcast starting at 5:15 p.m. on 99.3 FM The Beat, online at uapblionsroar.com, and on the free UAPB Athletics app.

Both teams dropped their first conference game last night at Alabama A&M, but are still in good standing in the conference.

The Lady Lions (2-10 overall, 1-1 SWAC) are looking to bounce back after dropping a 74-55 decision to the Lady Bulldogs.

"One of the biggest things we wanted to do was put last night contest behind us," said first-year UAPB head coach Dawn Brown. "We started today with a different mindset and went over our game plan for tomorrow. When you're playing teams in the conference, it's going to get intense in the paint, and we just have to jell together as a team, and we'll be ok."

UAPB had two players scored in double-figures against Alabama A&M. Junior Jayla Atmore, who ranks 15th in the conference in scoring, finished the game with 16 points and four assists. Senior Kyeonia Harris, who ranks 12th in the conference in scoring, added 14 points.

The Lady Hornets (5-9 overall, 2-1 SWAC) enter the contest after defeating Mississippi Valley State 77-64 Saturday night and are led by Avana Emmanuel, who leads the team in scoring averaging 12.1 ppg and Aniyah Smith, who leads the team in rebounds, averaging 5.9 rpg.

On the men's side, the Golden Lions (2-9 overall, 1-1 SWAC) dropped a 59-49 defeat to Alabama A&M, despite holding them to 33.3% percent shooting from the field.

"Our mindset is to focus on the Alabama State game," said UAPB head coach George Ivory. "We missed some easy baskets last night, and we can't afford to do that against a good team like Alabama State. We'll regroup and get back to playing our style of basketball."

Junior Terrance Banyard led the Golden Lions with 14 points and two blocks, followed by SWAC Player of the Week, junior Markedric Bell, who finished the game with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Despite holding the Bulldogs to a low shooting percentage, UAPB defense ranks second in the conference in allowed points per game with 71.7.

Alabama State (2-14 overall, 1-2 SWAC) defeated Mississippi Valley State 81-75 for its first conference win. The Hornets are led by Tobi Ewuosho, who leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.3 ppg and rebounds, averaging 5.9 rpg.
