UAPB last played one week ago, falling at Texas El Paso 59-50 last Saturday night. The Golden Lions trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half before cutting the deficit to one, 35-34, at halftime.
In the second half, UAPB stayed close with the Miners but could not take the lead. Marquell Carter scored a game-high 21 points with seven rebounds and two assists.
Jordan McNair (eight points) and
Isaiah Haralson (six points) each posted career-best scoring nights and gained valuable experience with SWAC play only three weeks away.
"We played together as a team," said UAPB head coach
George Ivory. "We made more shots and played really hard which was a good sign. We did a good job rebounding as well (outrebounding the Miners 27-26), so there were several good things we can build on."
The Golden Lions have battled injuries, as top players
Shaun Doss,
Terrance Banyard,
Jamil Wilson, and
Markedric Bell are among the players who have missed at least one game this season due to injury. A total of 22 different players have played in at least one game this season.

"Playing together and controlling tempo will be things we look to continue to improve upon," Ivory said. "We're still looking to lower our turnovers, especially those that lead to points for the opponent in transition. We are getting better as a team, but anytime you have four of your top nine players out it makes a big difference. The positive within that is a lot of guys are getting tremendous experience."
Oregon St. (6-1) of the Pac-12 Conference has won five games in a row and are among the top scoring teams in the league in averaging more than 80 points per game. The Beavers have four players averaging in double figures, led by Tres Tinkle, who leads them in scoring (21.4 ppg.), rebounding (8.6 rpg.), and assists (4.9 apg.).
"They are a very good basketball team with a lot of good shooters," said Ivory of Oregon St., which shoots nearly 50 percent from the field as a team. "They are a big team with a starting lineup of guys 6-5 or taller. "It will be a good test for us in how we communicate on defense and cover the three-point line. They like to shoot a lot of 3s, and if we can take that away, we'll have a chance to win the ball game."
