This week is the only one on the 2019 schedule in which all 10 SWAC teams play head to head. Jackson State won at Prairie View A&M in double overtime Thursday night to begin the week that features four other showdowns.
On a Saturday afternoon that will see a rematch of the SWAC Championship Game (Southern at Alcorn), a huge SWAC East Showdown at the Magic City Classic (Alabama St. vs. Alabama A&M), and a pair of teams coming off of close losses (Texas Southern at Miss. Valley State), the UAPB – GSU matchup will have its say as well as to how the day will be remembered.
Approximately one year ago, UAPB's 45-38 overtime loss at Grambling helped set the tone for how the program has evolved. In a contest that saw a combined 67 points scored after halftime, RB
Taeyler Porter rushed for a career-high 226 yards and three touchdowns, and
DeJuan Miller had career highs in receptions (10) and receiving yards (142) while tying a career-high with two TD receptions in the back-and-forth affair.
"I thought that was the foundational game for us," said UAPB head coach
Cedric Thomas. "For the players to go out in that overtime game even though we lost, to play well and have a cognitive mindset that we are good enough, that was huge for us."
Thomas knows the challenges Grambling presents and expects a physical contest, one that his team is preparing for.
"It's going to be a fight. It's going to be a real, tough, physical football game," Thomas said. "We have to make sure we withstand it. Everything we do is methodical…We have to continue to believe we are good enough. When you go in our locker room now, they walk different, they talk different. They've been through something. We have to understand that's who we are. We're a good football team too."
