PINE BLUFF, AR.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football team delivered an explosive performance Saturday afternoon, scoring 56 unanswered points and forcing five turnovers en route to a commanding 63-21 Southwestern Athletic Conference victory over Bethune-Cookman at Simmons Bank Field.
The Golden Lions improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in SWAC play, while the Wildcats fell to 5-4 and 3-2.
UAPB showcased a dominant offensive attack, with six different players finding the end zone. Demetric Whitlock Jr. led the scoring effort with three touchdowns, while running back Jaylen Jennings added two scores as the Golden Lions rolled up 451 yards of total offense, including 333 yards rushing.
"We talked to our players about bringing our own passion and pride to the game, regardless of who's in the crowd," said UAPB head coach Alonzo Hampton. "Our guys came out ready to play. We got started with a big run, got a pick-six, and when we're playing complementary football, we're a pretty special team. We're continuing to get better."
Quarterback Jack Schierholz directed the offense efficiently, throwing for 118 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.
Jennings led the rushing attack with 103 yards and two touchdowns, averaging an impressive 20.6 yards per carry. Jalen Williams added 80 yards and a touchdown, averaging 16 yards per attempt, while Chris Hicks Jr. contributed 66 yards and a score.
"First, I have to thank my offensive line. When I saw the hole, I knew I could break away," Jennings said. "We have three different backs, and we all support each other."
Hampton praised the depth of his backfield and the offensive line's ability to establish a physical presence against opposing defenses.
"Nobody works harder than Jaylen, and I was happy to see him break that run," Hampton said. "We have three really good running backs who share the workload. Running the football is who we are. We run the ball to set up the pass, not the other way around. It's a mentality. You have to impose your will on the opponent."
Wide receiver D'Avery Robinson added three receptions for 65 yards as UAPB continued to create explosive plays throughout the afternoon.
Golden Lions Defense Forces Five Interceptions
Defensively, the Golden Lions were equally impressive, intercepting five passes, recording six sacks and totaling 15 tackles for loss. UAPB held Bethune-Cookman to 346 yards of total offense and turned five takeaways into 28 points.
Camare Jackson led the defensive effort with seven tackles and an interception, while Du'Wayne Paulhill added six tackles and a pick. Josh Narcisse also contributed a sack, a tackle for loss and an interception.
"We've been putting in the work every day, and now you're seeing the results," Paulhill said. "We made a decision as a group to get better, and that's what we've been doing."
Hampton praised his defensive coaching staff and the Golden Lions' ability to create turnovers.
"When you stop the run, you make teams throw the football, and our guys were ready to make plays," Hampton said. "Coach Burrow and our entire defensive staff have done a tremendous job. This team is coming together at the right time, and I still believe we have another level we can reach."
UAPB Takes Control Early
The Golden Lions wasted little time establishing control, scoring on their opening possession and building a 28-0 advantage by the end of the first quarter.
UAPB continued its offensive onslaught in the second quarter, extending its lead to 49-0 before eventually building a commanding 56-0 advantage.
Bethune-Cookman responded with 21 unanswered points, but the Golden Lions closed out the contest with a fourth-quarter touchdown with 2:39 remaining to secure the 63-21 victory.
UAPB was perfect inside the red zone, converting all five opportunities into touchdowns, while finishing with a plus-four turnover margin.
Hampton credited his players' commitment to one another and the collective effort of his coaching staff for the team's continued improvement.
"This is the best staff I've been around since I've been coaching college football," Hampton said. "We may not have what everybody else has, but we have love for each other. These players and coaches are highly competitive, and everybody is pulling their weight. That's what you're seeing on the field."
With three regular-season games remaining, Hampton emphasized the importance of maintaining focus as the Golden Lions continue their push in the SWAC Western Division race.
"We control our destiny, but we have to take it one play at a time and one day at a time," Hampton said. "We'll get back to work, watch the film and continue improving. I don't think we've played our best football yet."
