Women’s Soccer To Kick Off New Era In Sunday Season Opener vs. Central Arkansas

Pine Bluff, AR. – It's a new era for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's soccer team, as first-year head coach Marcus Hoover makes his collegiate head coaching debut on Sunday, August 20 when the Lady Lions host Central Arkansas in a 3:00 p.m. start at Pumphrey Stadium.

On the pitch, Hoover is looking to replicate the success he enjoyed as an assistant coach at UAPB under Jamie Hutchinson, where in 2016, he helped lead the Lady Lions to a 9-8-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) record in his first season as an assistant with UAPB, culminating in an SWAC regular season championship game.

The following season, Hoover played an integral role in guiding the Lady Lions to a berth in the SWAC championship game on the strength of playing as one unit.

The 2017 Lady Lions will be led by a trio of juniors in midfielder Karissa Fenwick (Lusby, MD),  midfielder Mariah Johnson (Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.), and Rebecca Holmes (Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.).  Offensively, returning goal-scorers for the Black and Gold include sophomore Ana Silverio (Austin, TX), sophomore Kelsey Martin (Frederick Martin, Co.) as well as senior Allison Herrin (Highland, Ca.)

Last season, Rebecca Holmes and Karissa Fenwick both led the team in goals and points, but will play a major role the Lady Lions.

After the home opener on Sunday, UAPB will face Youngstown Friday Aug. 25th at 3 pm, before heading on the road for two days for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Invitational.  The Lady Lions will play two instate games September 12th and 17th, against Little Rock and Harding University.
