Box Score Houston, TX. - An early goal by
Ciera Fenwick helped the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's soccer team to a shutout in Conference play after a 1-0 win over Texas Southern at the TSU Soccer Complex on
Sunday afternoon.
The two teams were scoreless until the 20th minute when UAPB's (2-6-2, 1-2 SWAC) sophomore
Ciera Fenwick streaked down the right flank of the field and placed a perfect cross into the middle of the box. Fenwick jumped and headed it into the net for the only go ahead-winning goal of the game.
Both teams fired off 10 shots with junior
Makayla Cowles making two consecutive games with 10 saves and one clutching game saving save with less than two minutes in the game to earn the shutout for the first time this season. UAPB coming off an impressive defensive game gave first year head coach
Jamie Hutchison his first conference win as a Golden Lion.
"Texas Southern is a great team. They battled, they work hard, they pressure and they are physical," said head coach
Jamie Hutchison. "I was happy with the way we handled it, especially in the second half. As the game wore on I thought we did a great job of competing and getting chances." Cowles has step up making clutch saves, she's has played good every game but we have to turn things up a notch to help her. She's very strong mentally which helps the team, stay on task.
Sophomore
Ciera Fenwick proved to be a problem for the Tigers on the right flank. When she steps on the field opposing teams will have to focus to stop her and that will allow others teammates to step up.
"Fenwick is a great attacking player," Hutchison added. "She can run at you, she has pace, she can get in behind you with runs and she strikes the ball well. I thought she was constant down that right side and putting in dangerous crosses and eventually got on the end of that one."
"The girls are very excited with playing at home this weekend and really looking forward to playing in front of the student body and the community," said Hutchison.
UAPB continue SWAC play, with two consecutive home games, Friday October 2 vs. Alabama A&M at 3 p.m., and then face Alabama St. on
Sunday October 4, at 1 p.m.
