Box Score
Greenwood, MS. - Davon Haynes saved one of his best performance for the conference opener, scoring a career-high 26 points in the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff 78-73 victory over Mississippi Valley.

Valley (4-10, 0-1) made a statement from the opening tip, flying out to a 5-0 lead with less than two minutes taking off the board.
UAPB responded back with a powerful dunk by Jaylon Floyd in the 18:25 mark making the score 5-2, followed by Davon Haynes scoring on a three point play driving to the rim and connecting to cut the lead to one, 6-5.

The Lion then forced Valley to commit four turnovers within a minute and went on a 7-0 run. Valley started out on a fast paced, but Haynes & company was too much for the Delta Devils shooting 10-for-12 from the field, only making one attempt for a three pointer, and 6-for-8 from the charity stripes. Not only Haynes offense was on fire, but his presence on defense pulling a team high in rebounds with five, one block and one steal.

The Delta Devils fought back after the Lions had a 35-26 lead in the 5:11 mark, to cut the lead to one with a pair of free throws by Deangelo Priar right before half 40-39.

In the second half with the scored eventually tied at 45-45, UAPB converted into seven straight points to take the lead 52-45 with 12:46 in the half. Valley refuse to give up between the two teams, to what could be a "big rivalry" in the SWAC cutting the lead down to one, 59-58.

The Lions defense held Valley to 25 turnovers for the game, also shooting 24-for-54 (44.4%), 4-for-21 (19.0%), and 21-for-30(71.0%) from the free throw line.

Three student-athletes scored double figures, led by Davon Haynes with his 26 points, Daniel Broughton 14 points and Tevin Hamond with 12 points one assist and three steals to give him 40 for the season to make him No. 1 in the conference.

As a team UAPB shot 26-for-45 (57.8%) from the floor, 4-for-13(30.8%) from the arch and 22-for-31 from the free throw line.

Jeffrey Simmons led the way for Mississippi Valley with 20 points along with 16 points from DeAngelo Priar and 11 points from James Currington.

UAPB (3-10, 1-0) shifts its focus to Saturday January 11, 2014 as the Lions will travel to Huntsville, Ala. to face Alabama A&M 6 p.m. at the T.M. Elmore Gym.
