Men's Basketball: Lions Rally In The Second Half, But Fall Short In Home Opener Against Jaguars, 60-56

Box Score Pine Bluff, AR.- The University of Arkansas Pine Bluff came up short in the second half to a heart breaking loss to Southern University, 60-56 in their home opener at the H.O. Clemmons Arena Saturday night in front of a crowd of almost 5,000.

The Lions didn't shoot their best, shooting 7-of-24(29.17%) FG in the first half, but still managed to keep it close. UAPB had a several chances to take the lead but after having a major disappointing first half it was not enough for a second half comeback.

Southern's Malcolm Miller drained a three pointer to start the game with a 3-0 lead, to match with a jumper from UAPB Daniel Broughton to add to the scoreboard 3-2. After minutes passing with both team trading points the Lions took their first lead of the game with a three from Tevin Hammond making the score 11-9 with 15:31 left in the first half.

Southern (9-9, 5-0 SWAC) would then route to a 9-0 lead, making the score 18-11 with a jumper by Yondarius Johnson in the 9:50 left in the half. UAPB turned up the pressure on the Jaguars before going into intermission being down 30-24.

Malcolm Miller led the way for Southern with 14 points and Calvin Godfrey with 11 points.

The Lions was down by much as 10 in the second half, but came roaring back to cut the lead to two, with Marcel Mosley conecting on both free throws with 1:04 left in the game. The Golden Lions called timeout, looking to trap half court, but was called for a foul on each possessions and sent three Jaguars players to the free throw line within less than a min to ice the game in the defeat.

UAPB (4-12, 2-2 SWAC) outscored Southern 32-30 in the second half but it was not enough for the comeback. Overall for the game, the Lions shot 17 of-49 (34.7%) from the field, 4-of-19 (21.1%) from the arch, and 18-23(78.3%) from the charity stripes.

Davon Haynes led the way for the Golden Lions with a double-double scoring 19 points with 11 rebounds, followed by Tevin Hammonmd with 13 points and Marcel Mosley with 11 points.

The Lions will gear up for Alcorn St. Monday January 20, at the H.O. Clemmons arena 7:30 PM, which is "White Out". The Lion Country is asking all fans to wear white to support the Golden Lions in Monday night action.
