HOUSTON -- With one weekend left in the regular season, the UAPB soccer team saw its chances of making it to the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament slip dangerously close to the edge with a 2-1 loss to Texas Southern. TSU clinched a berth in the tournament, leaving one spot remaining in the Western Division. The Lady Lions are tied with Grambling at 0-2-1 going into the final weekend of the regular season. Both teams have games remaining against Southern, UAPB on Friday and Grambling on Sunday.
With the teams tying earlier this season, the tiebreaker could come down to goal differential or even a coin flip.
On Sunday, the Lady Lions had the lead after scoring first, but couldn't hang on. Celeste Carrera scored the first goal of the game in the 9th minute (8:26). Tiana Humphrey tied the game in the 25th minute (24:19) with an unassisted goal for TSU. Then, shortly before the half, Gabriella Perales assisted Makayla Johnson with the go-ahead goal in the 41st minute (40:41).
Neither team could generate any offense in the second half as TSU outshot UAPB 9-0. For the game, TSU had 15 shots, while UAPB finished with three.
Of the 15 TSU shots, five were on-goal. UAPB keeper Alyssa Cobbs stopped three of the shots.
After Friday's game vs. Southern, the Lady Lions will conclude the regular season at home against Jackson State on Sunday afternoon.
