The Matchup:
Something has got to give today. It's a matchup of two teams looking to break into the win column for the first time this season. The Golden Lions have been coming close and could very easily be 3-0 in the SWAC instead of 0-3. In their last game, the Lions led for much of the evening, but appeared to run out of steam in the fourth quarter. In their first SWAC loss, UAPB led late, only to see Alabama State score late to sneak away with a win.
The Golden Lions have been putting up points averaging 22.6 points per game. The problem has been keeping opposing offenses in check. The Golden Lions are surrendering over 44 points and 329 yards per game. Meanwhile, the TSU offense has had it's troubles. The Tigers have scored only 49 points total this season, averaging 9.8 points per contest. On defense, TSU has surrendered 34.6 points per game.
With homecoming looming next weekend, this looks like a golden opportunity for UAPB. In addition, even at 0-3 in SWAC play, both teams are very much alive in the race to Houston and the 2013 SWAC Championship game.
Series Record:
Texas Southern leads the series which dates back to 1949. The Tigers hold a 23-16-1 advantage. UAPB won the first meeting 19-18 in Pine Bluff. However, TSU won the next nine in a row and 13 of 14. However, in recent years, it's been the Golden Lions in control. UAPB has won two straight including last season's 49-3 win in Houston. The Golden Lions have won seven of the last nine games.
The largest blowout in the series came in 1955 when TSU beat UAPB 64-0. TSU was also to victor in the narrowest win in 2003, edging the Golden Lions 7-6.
The wildest game between the two teams came in 2006 as UAPB outscored TSU 42-31 in a shootout. In contrast, the lowest scoring game went to TSU in 1963 when the Tigers took home a 6-0 win.
Overall, there have been six shutouts in the series, one tie and five games decided by three (3) points or less.
