Pine Bluff, AR—The University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Lady Lions came out roaring and scored four goals in the first half to take a 4-1 victory over Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs in Southwestern Athletic Conference action Friday at the UAPB Soccer Complex. The Lady Lions improved to 8-4-1 with a 4-0 record in conference play.
“We had a tremendous first half coming back from being down an early goal,” said Head Coach Roberto Mazza. “We refused to put our heads down and we took it to them by scoring 4 goals in the first half. The girls showed tremendous maturity today.”
The Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs went up 1-0 in the 5
th minute of play but
Nicole Parks-Powell scored four minutes later to tie the game.
Kaitlin Morin, a junior defender, scored in the 14
th minute to put the Lady Lions up 2-1. Ten minutes later junior midfielder,
Taryn Wright scored to put the Lady Lions up 3-1. The scoring ended when freshman midfielder, Perri Weslosky, scored the 4
th goal of the half making the score 4-1.
In the second half, the Lady Lions pulled off seven of the starters with twenty minutes remaining in the game. “It is all about managing the team at this point of the season,” said Mazza. “Trying to run up the score is not what we are all about. We focus on the little things that make us better.”
The Lady Lions outshot the Bulldogs 24 to 14. The player of the game went to
Silvia Fuentes as she tallied all four assists. Fuentes' performance breaks a new program record in assists per game. Freshman Keeper Meaghan Storie made five saves on her 4
th win of the season.
The Lady Lions head to Texas this weekend for two Western Division games against Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern.
