Golden Lions Defeat Southern 22-21

PINE BLUFF, Ark.-The Southern Jaguars were able to score a touchdown with no time remaining, but Jarvis Webb blocked the extra-point attempt to help lift Arkansas-Pine Bluff to a 22-21 comeback victory on Saturday night.

Webb, deflected Matthew Hill's PAT kick, denying Southern an overtime chance after Joseph Dray connected with Slyvester Nzekwe with an 11-yard TD pass.

Stephen Jones had a 25-yard TD run with 1:30 remaining, and the Golden Lions (4-3, 3-2 SWAC) added a two-point conversion for a 22-15 lead with 1:30 left to play. The Jaguars (2-5, 2-3 SWAC) moved the ball 76 yards in seven plays for what could've been the tying score but UAPB's Webb prevented that from taking place with his critical PAT block.

“Despite being down at the half we felt like if we could come out and play two solid quarters of football we would have a chance to win this game,” said UAPB Head Coach Monte Coleman. “This was a gutsy effort by our football team and as a coaching staff we're extremely proud of the resiliency our players exhibited throughout the course of this game.”

Dennis Jenkins rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries for Arkansas-Pine Bluff while Justin Billings tallied 101 yards on 16 attempts.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff will have a bye this upcoming week followed by a pivotal match-up with the Grambling State Tiger at Golden Lions Stadium on October 29th at 2:30 pm.
