Lady Lions Start Off Slow Against LA Tech

UAPB's #16 Rachel Harker Deeks LA Tech Player in Center Midfield

RUSTON, La. - The Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions lost their second game of the season tonight 3-1 to the Lady Techsters of LA Tech. With two early goals, the Lady Techsters put the Lady Lions in a tough situation being 2-0 down going into the 2nd half.

“I felt that my players did not start the game with the same intensity that LA Tech did. Unfortunately it took the girls 30 minutes to really get into the game. But by that time LA Tech had already put two balls in the net. This is a good team that we played tonight and we can never afford to start slow in a game like this because good teams will make you pay for it,” said Mazza.

The Lady Techsters out shot the Lady Lions 17-4; however, on a positive note the Lady Techsters did not get any shots on goal in the 2nd half because the Lady Lions were determined to keep working hard on the field to get a decent result.

“I am proud that the girls came out and worked hard in the 2nd half. After every game I can look at some positive learning experiences to help our team grow. I think that tonight's game taught my players a lot about the importance of starting the game off with high intensity,” said Mazza.

The first goal came from sophomore Lindsay Brough in the 14th minute. The midfielder scored on a deflection off UAPB goalkeeper Bre-Ann Laypoole. The deflected ball found Brough 20-yards out from the goal.

Tech's second goal came in the 25th minute from junior Rachel King. Junior Scotti Culton handled the ball and made a short pass to King.

The third goal of the game went to LA Tech when a Lady Lion deflected the ball off a cross and the ball ended up in the back of her own net.

Jade West capitalized on a goal scoring attempt at the 62nd minute when she noticed the goalkeeper was off her line. At 25 yards out, West shot the ball high over the LA Tech goalkeeper Caitlin Updyke's head to score her second goal of the season.

The Lady Lions face Centernary College Sunday afternoon at 1pm in Shreveport, LA.
