PINE BLUFF, AR – The Lady Lions cruise to a 3-1 victory over the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University on Friday afternoon.
It was Texas Southern that got on the board first with at a shot from Jessica Smith that found the back of the net at 33rd minute.
The Lady Lions answered back seven minutes later at the 40th minute with a goal from sophomore Casey Hogan. A great passing play by freshman Kristy Martinez and junior Austen Keithley found Hogan on a run through the center field. Hogan's breakaway goal brought the Lady Lions to a tie game.
“That was a great all-around effort by the girls that came off the bench. Three players that came into the game after the TSU goal worked their tails off and brought the team back into the game. As a coach you just can't ask for more than that, that when those girls get their name called they step up to the challenge,” said Coach Mazza.
At the 61st minute, junior defender Erika Forbes scored from 25 yards out off a set piece. Forbes placed the ball perfectly at the near post and the TSU goalkeeper Erika Vasquez misjudged the ball which found its way through traffic to the back of the net.
The Lady Lions continued to pressure and dominate the game. At the 72nd minute junior Nicole Parks-Powell finished at shot to the upper ninety of the goal from a pass from freshman defender Reaghan Zilkie.
The Lady Lions tallied twenty-two shots to the Lady Tigers' five. The Lady Lions defense kept the Lady Tigers to one shot in the second half.
The Lady Lions face the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M at home Sunday afternoon at 1PM.
