PINE BLUFF, AR - Kristyna Boyd totaled 20 points and Jailah Pelly added 20, but the UAPB women's basketball team fell to the Texas Southern Tigers 75-65 at home Tuesday.
The Lady Lions had three players score in double figures, led by Boyd, who had 20 points and two steals. Pelly added 20 points and five assists and D'Arrah Allen chipped in as well with 12 points and five assists.
UAPB utilized fantastic ball movement in Tuesday's game, piling up 19 assists on 24 made field goals. Individually, Allen was on top of the distribution list for the Lady Lions with five assists.
UAPB forced 19 Texas Southern turnovers. The Lady Lions turned those takeaways into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Stephanie Okowi's two steals led the way for UAPB.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-2, UAPB went on a 6-0 run with 7:19 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Boyd, to take an 8-6 lead. The Lady Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-13 advantage. UAPB did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 14 points close to the basket.
The Lady Lions could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 33-28.
Texas Southern continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-29 advantage before UAPB went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Pelly, to trim its deficit to 42-38 with 4:35 to go in the third. The Lady Lions continued to reduce the Texas Southern lead, shrinking it to 53-51 by the end of the third quarter. UAPB took advantage of five Texas Southern turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of takeaways.
UAPB could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 75-65.
