JACKSON, MS --The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team dropped a 76-60 conference loss to the Jackson State Tigers on the road Thursday.
The Golden Lions had three players score in double figures, led by Jailah Pelly, who had 17 points and three steals. Kristyna Boyd added 14 points and Stephanie Okowi helped out with 10 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
The UAPB defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Thursday's game, forcing 19 Jackson State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. D'Arrah Allen led the way individually for the Golden Lions with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-2, UAPB went on a 6-0 run with 6:19 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Boyd, to take an 8-6 lead. The Golden Lions then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 17-16.
UAPB kept the Tigers from increasing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Okowi, to take a 26-21 lead. The Tigers then came roaring back to take a 36-30 lead heading into halftime.
Jackson State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 56-34 advantage before UAPB went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Briontanay Marshall, to trim its deficit to 56-39 with 1:58 to go in the third. Jackson State countered and stretched its lead to 58-39 heading into the fourth. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring six of its nine points in the paint.
Jackson State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 65-45 advantage before UAPB went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Uriah Jennings' layup, to shrink the deficit to 65-51 with 6:03 to go in the contest. Jackson State responded and outscored the Golden Lions the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 76-60. UAPB took advantage of four Jackson State turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
