#UAPBWomensHoops: Golden Lions Open SWAC Play at Home on New Year’s Day

PINE BLUFF, AR. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team opens Southwestern Athletic Conference play on New Year's Day, hosting the Alabama State Hornets at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. (CT), with the game streaming live on the UAPB Sports Network on YouTube.

UAPB enters conference play under head coach Erica Leak, now in her second season, with a defensive-minded group that has established itself among the league's top units. The Golden Lions currently rank fifth in the SWAC in scoring defense, holding opponents to 74.3 points per game, while also ranking among the conference leaders in steals.

Defensively, UAPB features three players ranked in the SWAC's top 12 in steals, led by Indiya Bowen, who ranks fifth in the league at 1.8 steals per game. Jailah Pelly follows in 10th, while Jasmine Davis ranks 12th, showcasing the Golden Lions' ability to apply pressure and force turnovers.

Offensively, UAPB is led by two of the SWAC's top six scorers. Pelly ranks fourth in the conference, averaging 12.9 points per game, while also contributing 6.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.8 steals per contest. Bowen ranks sixth in the league, averaging 12.1 points per game, along with 3.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per outing.

The Golden Lions have also received solid production in the front court, with Khaniah Gardner averaging 5.0 rebounds per game, Tyra Taylor contributing 5.4 points and 4.9 rebounds, and Briontanay Marshall adding 5.3 rebounds per game, helping UAPB remain competitive on the glass.
